EN1-10C thinks imaginatively and creatively about familiar topics, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts
Content:
Respond to and compose texts
- (1) recreate texts imaginatively using drawing, writing, performance and digital forms of communication (ACELT1586)
- (2) predict and discuss ideas drawn from picture books and digital stories
- (3) use creative and imaginative features in role-play and drama
With the consideration of the E5 Instructional Model, as well as the other frameworks - Educators can successfully explore the Picture Book "Mr McGee & The Biting Flee" by Pamela Allen.
- Students can further explore this text by showing a YouTube Clip over the IWB and students will be able to read along to this text.
- As lessons progress, students can begin to create their own mini story boards or drafts and perform their own role play for this text in pairs or groups of 3.
- Before creating their own role play, to successfully achieve the first "Content Outcome (1)" students can recreate their "favourite scene" of the book by drawing it in their books. Sharing can be done by projecting their pictures over the IWB.
- (2) Outcome can be achieved through the exploration of more digital stories further found on YouTube or websites that show PDF's of the chosen books. Teacher lead and student discussions can be sparked to discuss different ideas from each of the picture books.
- (3) Outcome is achieved through the successfully planned and performed role play of their favourite scenes from "Mr McGee and the Biting Flee"
Please note that this activity can easily be adapted to many other picture books or novels for different stages thus easily catering for other student needs. Also, differentiation can be done through the use of creating their own songs about the characters, or re-writing their own story with the use of the characters in the book etc.
